Rector's Corner:  Think on These Things...

My sisters and brothers in Christ, welcome to Lent. Once again the journey begins in the wilderness of our lives for 40 long days, ending joyfully with the hope of Easter. As we begin this journey in Lent, allow yourself to get lost in the struggles through this season as you take on a discipline that will strengthen your relationship with God.

Lent is about the courageous introspection to learn where we have veered away from God, then the humility to rest in the heart of Easter. It is the rising of our old selves into new God-directed ones. Allow yourselves to get lost in Lent –lost in the sharing of the suffering of Christ. This holy time is about Jesus’ agony on the cross and the lessons he taught, like trust in our Father and belief in our eternal salvation.

Lent is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As we engage ourselves in these disciplines we are reminded that Lent is a season of sparseness, of being aware of the desert in our own souls when we walk with Christ. So engage in prayer as spiritual discipline, fasting for mental discipline and service as a physical discipline.

So, allow yourselves to get lost in Lent. The wilderness experience is a vast experience filled with trepidation, challenges, pitfalls, and, yes, dangers. Remember that we do not travel this wilderness alone or unaccompanied. The presence of our Lord Jesus Christ is with us at all times. Take advantage of this experience –allow yourself to get lost in Lent and be found by Jesus. Practice the disciplines of Lent--prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Get lost in them, and allow them to lead the way out of your wilderness of winter toward the springtime of your transformed life.

My beloved in Christ, whether you celebrate Lent by giving up gossip or practicing more prayer, remember to fine-tune your awareness of the omnipresence of God who permeates all that you do.

Have a holy and blessed Lenten season. Pax vobiscum.
